Comparison of digital cameras?
I need a real photographer’s opinion on this: which of these cameras would you recommend to be the best for a beginning but very enthusiastic photographer?
Canon EOS 450D Digital Rebel XSi
Nikon D80
Sony Alpha DSLR A300
What gives a camera its picture quality?
The short answer is that it is mostly the skill of the photographer that produces high quality pictures. The lens and camera are very important, but the ability to set the scene, adjust the cameras settings, and hold the camera very still or use a tripod with auto or remote shutter actuation when required is what gets the great pictures.
Many of the new cameras come with only an LCD screen. Would suggest that you find one that also has an optical view finder because the LCD screen is almost impossible to see in bright sun.
Higher mega pixels may not really be the best thing to look for. Check this camera. FUJIFILM – FinePix 10.0-Megapixel Digital. This is more camera for the money.

The information about my camera is just to show that you don’t need the biggest and best. Just know how to use the one you have.
My camera has 5.2 mega pixel, but I use 3 most of the time because it gives great results, is faster, and takes less memory. Also, it only has a 3 x optical zoom and 7x digital zoom. I never use the digital zoom because making pictures larger works better on the computer. This is an old camera, but everyone is impressed with the quality pictures it takes … like magic.
Check with the Geeks in several stores and compare prices. Ask what cameras they own. Once you select a camera read all about it in the owner’s manual.

I’m going to take a slightly different angle on answering this. As a beginner, you’ll want to trade up before too long and the Nikon’s have a much better resell market in my opinion. I used to throw in the fact that Canon did NOT have an 18-200 all-purpose lens but they just released one. They still don’t have a tiny flash like the Nikon SB400 either. If you do go Nikon, go with the D90 instead of the D80. It just came out and is a substantial upgrade. I just bought one myself and I’d recommend it over the more expensive D200 (which I have) and D300 to beginners without hesitation.

I asked a question similar to that one a few weeks back and the question was "I am planning to buy my first DSLR. What is the best brand/model for a beginner like me?"
Many people (thank you for your answers!!!) told me to buy a Nikon D40 or a D60.
I was planning to buy the Olympus E-520 before I posted the question because I have a very good Olympus point and shoot camera. It’s a different story when considering a DSLR, I realized.
I’ll go with the Nikon. Canon is great too. Canon film cameras served my purpose well before digicams came about. I’ll never go for a Sony.
By the way, SoonerFanSF is right. You can get good reviews from http://www.dpreview.com/
